Basic considerations on the design of underground openings

Abstract:

After a brief review of the factors governing the structural behaviour of undergroundopenings a survey is given of the use of numerical methods in tunneling. The use of parametric studies to enable the important factors in a particular case to be singled out is illustrated. Field measurements during construction are discussed as a further design aid of equal importance.
