The Planning of long, deep base tunnels through the Alps in France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland makes the problem of tunneling in squeezing rock highly relevant. This work attempts to provide an insight into the fundamental aspects of this special field of modern tunneling. Starting with a presentation of the empirical facts, the duality of rock deformation and rock pressure are discussed using straightforward theoretical considerations. After this, the questions of excavation and stability as well as of the design are dealt with in detail. Finally, pseudo-scientific developments are examined, which have caused and still are causing much confusion, especially in this area of tunneling.
