To describe the stress-strain behavior of rock it is recommended to use mechanical models consisting of the conventional Hooke and Newton elements as well as a modified St. Venant element. The implementaion of these elements in a general finite element code allows the user to take into account realistic material laws by combining mechanical models of any degree of complexity. For practical applications a specific model is chosen according to the desired prediction capability and according to the behavior of the prototype.
