Micromechanical analyses of sturzstroms (rock avalanches) on Earth and Mars

Abstract:

A sturzstrom is a hazard that occurs on Earth and Mars when large masses of rock (greater than 10e6 m**3) detach from the host. Runout is much greater than may be predicted due due to static friction. Revealing the mechanism of long runout has implications on hazard mitigation and Mars history.
